Gladys Aylward

GLADYS AYLWARD (1902-1970) is known as “The Little Woman” or “Virtuous One” who was a missionary to China for many years. At the beginning of her tenure, Gladys joined a seasoned missionary widow to run an inn where, in the evening, they would entertain their guests with stories from the Bible. Gladys also began taking children into her home, and soon she had an orphanage with about 100 children. She is author of her autobiography entitled Gladys Aylward: The Little Woman. The 1958 film Inn of the Sixth Happiness, is loosely based on events from her life. Gladys died in Taiwan at age 67 of pneumonia.

MARK H. FAITH COXE BAILEY (1924–1972) was a writer and pastor’s wife who lived in Syracuse, New York. Born in Hackensack, New Jersey, she graduated from the Simmons College school of publications in Boston, studied writing at Boston University, and took courses at Andover-Newton Seminary. During her long writing career she worked as a commercial copywriter, wrote for many magazines, and developed Sunday school curriculum. She also wrote for Moody Radio’s Stories of Great Christians and Moody Monthly magazine. She died of ovarian cancer at 48.
