Product Description

Heal, mature, and grow together.

Too often, our needs are perceived—by ourselves and others—as either burdens to shamefully hide, or idols before which everything else must bow. The Hospitality of Need provides a biblical framework for readers to see their needs as opportunities for deeper, truer community and relationships.

Through engaging real-life stories, Kevan Chandler and Tommy Shelton share what can happen when we invite others into our lives—hardships and all. Ultimately, this is a book about friendship . . . the kind that God has called us to live in . . . friendship that goes deep and flourishes, not in spite of our needs but actually through them.

This book is for both caregivers and care receivers. It's for the wider Christian community that wants to grow in awareness of the needs around them. With the right heart and approach, we can—and must—follow Jesus' beautiful call to care for one another. The Hospitality of Need shows us how. Join Kevan and Tommy's invitation into a journey that will foster healing, growth, and deeper Christian fellowship.

Endorsements

"I've never read a book like this before. I mean, even this question, 'Are we willing to sometimes be the weak ones?' made me think deeply. Kevan and Tommy have done us a favor here. I've never thought about hospitality this way. So good!"
—Brant Hansen, Radio/podcast host and bestselling author of Unoffendable and The Men We Need

"I have long believed that it's hard to produce good gifts—in stories, art, or almost any endeavor—apart from pain. Birth pains bring longed-for life, and a cross comes before a crown. Kevan's life is a story of changing pain into powerful gifts, turning limits into launchpads. In this new book, Kevan brings more hard-fought truth to us, alongside his friend Tommy. Between Kevan's disability and Tommy's work as a pastor, they together have lessons for us from the front. And, surprise, these lessons are all about the power of weakness in this wonderful, worthwhile book."
—S. D. Smith, Author of The Green Ember series and The Found Boys

"Kevan and Tommy have written a simple yet profound book that delves into the most fundamental of human needs, the need to belong. Their work moved me so much, I wish I would have written something similar years ago—much like Kevan, I have a disability and God has organically created a wonderful community of friends that have gathered around my 'need.' The result is true 'community' in which we all feel secure, have purpose, receive reward, and are free to offer our authentic selves to one another. However, Kevan Chandler and Tommy Shelton take this idea much further in The Hospitality of Need. Their stories and insights provide a powerful response to people's desperate longing to feel accepted, valued, and supported. And this remarkable book does not stop there. It goes further to describe how the reader can create a fulfilling community that brings health and wholeness to everyone. Honestly, The Hospitality of Need shows the way God created us to be. The book you hold in your hands gets five stars from me!"
—Joni Eareckson Tada, Founder of the Joni and Friends International Disability Center
