Where have all the disciples gone?
There is a missing force in Christianity today. It's a critical one, and its absence has led to weak believers, disintegrating families, ineffective churches, and a decaying culture. Without it, we lack what we need to fully live as heaven's representatives on earth.
That missing force is discipleship. In Kingdom Disciples, Tony Evans outlines a simple, actionable definition of discipleship to help the church fulfill its calling. Readers will learn:
Kingdom disciples are in short supply, and the result is a legion of powerless Christians attending powerless churches, having a powerless presence in the world. The power, authority, abundance, victory, and impact God has promised will only come about when we understand and align ourselves with His definition of discipleship.
Kingdom Disciples calls believers and churches back to our primary, divinely ordained responsibility to be disciples and make disciples. Only when we take seriously this assignment will the world see heaven at work on earth.
Will you accept the assignment?
Kingdom Disciples is useful as base material for a course on discipleship.
What an excellent book on discipleship! Whilst looking for a book on discipleship I came across this book by Tony Evans and decided to read it after reading the description-it did not disappoint. I fear discipleship is neglected in the church today. Few churches point their focus in producing true disciples of Christ and making the Great Commission a priority. But discipleship is not only important but a command and a mark of true faith in our lives.
In "Kingdom Disciples" Dr. Evans addresses discipleship in 3 parts: The Foundation of Kingdom Discipleship, The Formation of Kingdom Discipleship, and The Function of Kingdom Discipleship. He explains what discipleship means and personal application using the Scriptures for examples. Dr. Evans also goes on to explain how a true disciple is to make more disciples and the church's role in discipleship.
I like this quote from the book:
"One mark of a person who wants to follow Christ, one absolute necessity for being His disciple, is to be His witness and testimony in all you do."
I recommend this book for those who are looking to learn what discipleship is all about. Dr. Evans has done a great work in presenting this material in a well- rounded way that covers any question you may have about the topic.
If you've read my reviews before, then you know that I love reading Tony Evans books. They are so practical and full of great nuggets of truth. To be honest, I think I like them because they remind me of one of my favorite books of the Bible, Proverbs. With Proverbs, you can pick it up, turn to any chapter, any verse and find something that will help you. With Tony Evans, you really don't have to read the whole book or even the whole chapter. You can pick up pretty much anything he writes and turn anywhere in the book and find a line or paragraph that will just jump of the page.
For instance, I randomly picked up this book, opened it up and found this thought: "What too many believers have done is put a portion of their time, talents, and treasures on God's altar and assumed it is enough. It is not. God wants all of you to be given to Him."
Or how about this one: "True worship is not simply singing songs on Sunday. True worship...is giving yourself to God in your entirety. True worship includes surrender."
I think a good way to sum up what is found in this book is this quote from the chapter on Family: "A Kingdom disciple is one who surrenders every area of his life to the lordship of Jesus Christ."
If your looking for a how to transform people's lives in 3 steps, this isn't your book. But if you are looking for a book that will dig down deep into the issues of what truly make a disciple of Jesus, then this is the book for you. It's full of great illustrations, stories, and personal experience. But most of all, it's full of Biblical truth about the fact that being a disciple of Jesus is more than just words, it's about taking up your cross and following Jesus.
I would like to thank Moody Publishing for the opportunity to review this book. They put out great material that is good for preachers, teachers, and anyone else interested in learning more about God. So go out and buy their stuff. I guarantee that it will help you in your walk with God.
I have long been a fan of Dr. Evans and his books. So when an opportunity arose to receive a free copy of his newest book, Kingdom Disciples, in exchange for a review, I jumped at the chance!
It was everything I've come to expect from Dr. Evans and more. All the books in his Kingdom series (and I've read all but one) are fantastic, and inspire readers to view all of life through a Kingdom lens. This latest book is a practical overview of discipleship, and it teaches what a disciple is, what a disciple should do, and how to make disciples of others. It is highly informative, but also deeply inspiring and even challenging at times.
In Dr. Evans' typical straight-forward-yet-loving fatherly way, he spoke straight to my heart, his words piercing right through all the selfish, fearful, complacent muck that had built up around it.
I will warn you, if you're looking for a feel-good book that you can passively consume and walk away from filled with warm tinglies, then this is not the book for you. If, however, you are desiring to deepen your faith and get serious about living out the call of God in your life, then this is an absolute must-read. You will not read this book and want to live life the same self-seeking, self-interested way you've been living it, I can assure you. Rather, you will see that our lives are to be lived for more than just ourselves, and that discipleship is a life that God has called all of his children to embrace.
“Kingdom Disciples, Heaven’s Representatives on Earth” by Dr. Tony Evans, is a weighty work written in a contemporary, easy-to-read format. In his usual personable “Every Man” vernacular, Dr. Evans draws the reader into each chapter by using common scenarios to encourage Christians to thirst for more. More than just MY salvation. Some of us received the free gift of salvation through Christ…and never asked what we are to do next. Dr. Evans urges the reader of “Kingdom Disciples” to walk in the purpose for which we’ve been created, study to show ourselves approved by God, and grow daily into vital workers for our Lord Jesus Christ. In short, to become Disciples. So that we can make other Disciples…just as Christ commanded us (Matt. 28: 18-20). Dr. Evans makes it crystal clear that living as a Disciple will cost us something. We WILL have to bear our personal cross for the cause of Christ. But if doing so means even one person will be freed from the burden of sin, will it be worth it? After reading “Kingdom Disciples”, I was strengthened by the fact that what I do for the cause of Christ actually matters. No Saint is insignificant in God’s Kingdom Program. And Dr. Evans has, by the aid of God’s Holy Spirit, given us a tool in “Kingdom Disciples, Heaven’s Representatives On Earth” that will compel Christians who are thirsty for more than “fire insurance” to make a profound impact in not only our personal lives, but in our homes, our communities, our churches, our schools, our country, and our world. This book is powerful. Thanks, Dr. Evans.
This is a great book that challenges believers to become Kingdom disciples which can be defined as a believer in Christ who takes part in the spiritual developmental process of progressively learning to live all of life in submission to Jesus Christ. Dr. Evans book challenges you to be sold out for Christ. The goal of Kingdom Disciples is to help you have a transformed life and to replicate God’s kingdom values in the lives of others. This book reminds us that the purpose of the church is to make disciples, not just add names to the roll or increase small-group Bible study attendance. It’s not enough for the church just to be open a certain number of hours a week or offer a variety of programs. We are to make disciples. A disciple is a person who has decided that following Jesus Christ takes precedence over everything else. Are you ready to be a Kingdom Disciple? If so this book will guide you in the right direction. Are you ready to get beyond shallow Christianity and move on to becoming a true disciple of Jesus Christ? Then start reading today. Included is a step-by-step guide for an individual, family, church, and community on how to become better Kingdom Disciples!
It is a practical overview of discipleship. As you read, you will learn what a disciple is, what discipleship looks like for individuals, families, and communities, and what impact discipleship can have on the world. Kingdom Disciples calls believers and churches back to our primary responsibility of becoming and making disciples. Only when we take our assignment seriously will the world see heaven at work on earth. Will you answer the call? If so read this book today.
Curious why Christianity seems so powerless in our culture? Interested in learning more about discipleship? Need to be motivated to make disciples? This is your book! It will fire you up to change the world through Jesus Christ!
I agree wholeheartedly with Dr. Evans' premise. The point of the book is that kingdom disciples are in short supply and that too many Christians are professing in name only without the power and authority of the Holy Spirit in their lives. Section 3 was my favorite and it fleshes out what kingdom discipleship looks like individually, in the family, and in the church.
This book dispels positive Christian cliches and "name it and claim it" theology, instead proving from Jesus's own words that discipleship comes at a cost but that the cost is well worth paying for our Savior and Lord.
The first chunk of the book is spent convincing the reader that many professing Christians aren't kingdom disciples. My guess is that most people who are interested in this book are already convinced of that.
Overall, this book gives a great definition of kingdom disciples and encourages readers to be Heaven's representatives on Earth. I recommend it!
Dr. Tony Evans characteristically expounds on what it entails to be a true disciple of Christ in his latest book. Kingdom Disciples clearly presents Evans to be one who practices what he preaches.
Evans offers ample personal and collective illustrations of why "kingdom disciples are truly dead men walking" (98). He does not mince words in his call-to-action for all those who submit to the Lordship of Jesus Christ and journey this earthly life representing the King on the highway to heaven purposefully.
He asserts that "life of a kingdom disciple is a life that results from inner transformation based on the power of the Spirit enabling the power of the Word to so fully link you with Christ that you reflect Him in all you do" (112). That he firmly believes that disciples are created for good works and the betterment of others is amply evident in all that he presents.
Evans cautions that kingdom discipleship is not for the fainthearted, but for those who are willing to pin their "self" to the cross in walking the straight and the narrow in this pilgrimage on earth in light of eternity. This voluntary effacing of the self, he affirms "enables us to be the salt and the light in our communities that Christ has called us to be as His kingdom disciples" (234).
So, the question remains, my friends, if we can put away the "Self" and divisiveness among us and bridge the barriers built on race, class, gender, nationality and truly reflect the Authority and Promise of what is to come, in the here and the now, in this life of earth as Almighty God's disciples for the furtherance of His Kingdom, power, and glory?
This is one book that will challenge you and edify you immeasurably. Nothing to lose; all to gain!
The Holy Spirit is definitely working through Tony Evans and the book is a testament to that. I'm inspired after reading this book to gather a group and discuss the chapters - and discuss what it means to be a true disciple of Jesus, what true discipleship is, and to discuss what is missing in the church. I would incourage others to read this book, then gather a group & discuss how the church body can walk vibrant and alive like the church we read about in Acts 2.
This would be an excellent tool in new members class. I love this book. It was well written and insightful. It really makes you stop and think and ask yourself those hard questions we dont like to answer. So grateful to Dr. Tony Evans for being an instrument in God's hands.
Are you ready to upset the world? (Acts 17:6 NAS) When we become a people on fire for Jesus, so excited about Him, we shake up the church and the community. This book will propel you into your journey of being the disciple that God has called you to be. Dr. Tony Evans lays down a firm foundation with God’s truth and builds on God’s desire and God’s plan for us in becoming kingdom disciples.
Dr. Evans points out in his new book, Kingdom Disciples, just how important it is to know what a disciple is. He defines it as, “a believer in Christ who takes part in the spiritual developmental process of progressively learning to live all of life in submission to Jesus Christ.” When we make spiritual development a priority in our daily lives, living a life in submission to Jesus Christ begins to overflow into those around us…making discipleship fun, exciting and rewarding.
Through his book, Dr. Evans outlines the key elements of being an effective disciple, guiding us through each component with biblical applications. Getting personal with Dr. Tony Evans is an added bonus. As he humbly shares his personal experiences, he makes God’s desire for us and His plan for us relatable and intimate, arming us with the tools we need to succeed as kingdom disciples.
Are you ready to see your country change? Are you ready to see your community change? As Dr. Evans so perfectly states, “What we desperately need are more disciples, visible and verbal unapologetic followers of Jesus Christ.” We are on assignment, folks! Let’s get out there and make disciples for the Kingdom and upset the world!
There is so much conviction in this book. Even as a Christian that hears His voice and sees His hands move in my life constantly, I draw so much from this book on how to make a greater impact for His Kingdom. I completely love this book, as so many of Pastor Evans books. It's not about if you are ready or not to be His Disciple, we are all called to His side to disciple others. It doesn't require anything out of the ordinary if He doesn't speak it into your heart, we disciple every day in our interactions with others everywhere we go. All it takes is obedience to His word and His voice. You have to read this! If you want to grow deeper in your relationship with Christ, see His power work in your life, and let His power work through you, this is the key to start you on the right path.
A must read! This book is challenging, convicting and a great reality check - are we a worthless or faithful servant! Are we putting ourselves under the comprehensive rule of God or just doing all the religious things that we feel are necessary. We can change our world when we truly become a kingdom disciple. Dr. Tony Evans has done a fabulous job in showing us how it's done.
True to form, Dr. Tony Evans writes the way he preaches. His latest book is no exception. The message may not be a popular one but it is definitely a necessary one. We need to go back to basics. This is what rings loud and clear throughout this book. The early church knew how to follow Jesus' command:
"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations..."
Somehow we have wavered from God's original plan.
Dr. Evans breaks it down so we understand what it really means to be a disciple. He then gives us the tools to share Jesus with others. At times very convicting, this is a guidebook that everyone needs to own. Dr. Evans never disappoints.
