Product Description

“Little did I know at the time that I'd one day look back and remember it as the beginning of what I call our 'weeping years.'” — Ashleigh Slater

We all have “weeping years,” seasons where the trials seem to come one after another. For Ashleigh and her husband, their weeping years included miscarriage, multiple job losses, feelings of betrayal, panic attacks, anti-depressants, cross-country moves, and even suicidal thoughts.

Loss is a constant of life, but the intensity of those years changed Ashleigh, altering how she understood and responded to grief. This book tells her story.

Braving Sorrow Together: The Transformative Power of Faith and Community When Life is Hard explores loss and trial in a conversational, storytelling manner. It gently encourages those experiencing grief of any kind to seek comfort in God and in the “me too” of community. Ashleigh gives an honest and vulnerable account of her personal stories of loss, as well as those of her friends, with reflections from literature and Scripture sprinkled throughout.

She examines the nature of grief and loss in several universal arenas, such as relationships, health, career, and the home. Anyone who ever struggles (and that's all of us) will be able to move through trial with more wisdom, releasing anxiety and receiving the help and comfort God so bountifully provides.

Readers of Braving Sorrow Together will be encouraged that they are not alone, inspired to reach out to close friends, and reminded that God—the Author of all of our stories— can be trusted through the tears.

Includes an appendix with further reflections on leaning into community in difficult seasons.

  • This book was a breathe of fresh air

First of all, the cover of this book cheers me which feels like a sweet compliment to the subject matter. This book was a breathe of fresh air, giving space to address the deep grief that can be true in so many areas of life; job, relationships, home, etc. This book felt like permission to grieve while showing how necessary it is to name and address the hard things in our lives. I loved the practical ways the author addressed moving forward in each area, without making it too formulaic. This book is a practical book, but also a book that makes grief feel less lonely, pointing the reader towards Jesus and community. A for me.

  • This is a must-read and -share book.

Ashleigh Slater's Braving Sorrow Together: The Transformative Power of Faith and Community When Life is Hard is a word fitly spoken in a world where the cultural motto now is "Me, too". Here, Slater gives us a spate of shared stories, and some personal wisdom gleaned from community experiences, about the power of faith and community when dealing with difficult issues pertaining to jobs, health, relationships, laying down dreams and so much more.

All of us have stories of loss, and Slater's beautiful book reminds us that God is able to transform that loss into something new, something evangelical, within the community of those who have learned the stories of loss to be stories of resurrection, too.

Braving Sorrow Together weaves together Scripture, personal stories, practical thoughts, and guest entries to comfort the suffering and encourage hopeful grieving. This is a must-read and -share book.

Life is hard. Relationships, jobs, health, and life are hard.

    Ashleigh Slater gets it.

Her new book, Braving Sorrow Together, is a beautifully anointed work showing how so many people have come through sorrows like death, miscarriage, job loss, and more, able to share their stories with others.

I’m not a mom, but I love how she explains her journey of becoming a parent and how connected that was to her career. In explaining how she mourned her own career dreams not coming to pass, and coming to terms with how her own worth is more than just what she does for a living, she says:

“I realized that I’d put too much emphasis on my worth being tied directly to my aspirations and the fulfillment of them… I’d strongly believed that… my life would have greater value than it did at home changing diapers and filling up sippy cups with strawberry milk. I came to see that I was wrong.” (page 102)

Her words on this topic are a blessing to people who struggle to understand that their own significance is more than just what they do during their working days. She’s speaking to the self-worth that we all have.

Overall, Braving Sorrow Together is highly relevant and highly recommended.
