We all have anger issues. Some may not be as severe as others, but we all experience anger in some fashion. In Anger: Taming a Powerful Emotion, Dr. Gary Chapman teaches us all about anger, biblical backgrounds (yes, even God got angry), and how we can use anger for good. When we think of anger, we only have bad thoughts. Some of us have experienced anger in a more negative way than others. But, I love how the book describes how anger itself is not a sin, but the way we handle it and the actions we take are the sin. I honestly get mad more than I like to admit. And I feel so bad for getting angry. In the book, Dr. Chapman states that anger is a positive emotion that shows us that we care about the person or thing that has wronged us. We should take a step back and acknowledge our anger, and deal with it in a positive and loving manner that will benefit the person who angered us. This book is filled with spiritual truths, and the things Dr. Chapman covers, is scripture based. Anger is an issue we all deal with, whether we use this emotion all the time or once in awhile. I will be the first to admit, I have big issue with anger. I used to get mad at the slightest little thing, if someone said the wrong thing to me, or if something didn’t go my way I was blowing my top. I blamed my parents for my anger issues, growing up in a home full of yelling and the slightest thing would cause your dad to blow his gasket, you learned to be reserved but in the mean time you were learning that this is how you handle everything.
When I was given the opportunity to read Gary Chapman’s new book, Anger, I couldn’t wait. I had already came to grips with my problem and sought help from God, counseling, and Celebrate Recovery, but knew I needed something else. Anger: Taming A Powerful Emotion will help you, recognize the difference between “bad” and “good” anger, how to use anger to motivate you toward a positive change, release long-simmering resentment, and how to teach others how to deal with anger (especially your children).
Anger is part of life but it doesn’t have to control your life and make everyone scared of you. Learning how to handle it is the key. This book has helped me tremendously and has helped me teach my daughters about anger. Another great thing about this book is it comes with reflection questions at the end of each chapter as well as a discussion guide you could use with a small group, and a personal anger assessment to see how you manage your anger.
