I have been doing Bible Studies for over 30 years. This is without a doubt one of the BEST.
Erica Wiggenhorn's first Bible study, An Unexplainable Life, is by far my favorite Bible study. It truly did change my life and develop within me a desire to know the Word better and to live unexplainable lives like those we see in the first chapters of Acts as the church began it's initial expansion. The Unexplainable Church picks up right where An Unexplainable Life left off, covering Acts chapters 13-28 in a 10-week study that can be done alone or in a small group.
There are many reasons I have come to love Erica Wiggenhorn's studies. I love the cultural context that she includes to help the reader move from applying the passages strictly to their own life and instead examining how the passage would have applied to the initial readers of the book. Giving these deeper contexts has helped me understand Paul's other letters as well! Learning about the cultural beliefs and practices of Phillipi, Galatia, and Corinth in this study help the reader to better understand Phillipians, Galatians, and 1st and 2nd Corinthians later in the New Testament.
The study is divided into 10 sessions of 5 studies each, which means there is grace to miss two days a week and not fall behind! Each day's study can be done in 30 minutes or so, depending on how in depth you'd like to study the passage. Aesthetically, the study itself is beautiful, carrying the blue watercolor theme of An Unexplainable Life throughout its pages as well.
I don't give that high of a rating often, but both The Unexplainable Church and An Unexplainable Life are such fantastic, in-depth studies that are challenging and glorifying of the Lord's Word! I cannot recommend them highly enough!
The Unexplainable Church is incredible! It’s a ten-week study, or fifty-day journey into the book of Acts, starting in chapter 13 and continuing through 28. Wiggenhorn’s first Acts study is called An Unexplainable Life and focuses on Acts 1-12. Erica begins the study with a divine invitation for us to listen to the Holy Spirit. He calls in Acts 13:2, to “Separate yourself for the special work I have planned for you.” And from there, we chronologically work through the rest of Acts. I found the workbook format to be easy to read, each section is timely spaced, and engaging for groups or individual study. I liked the detailed questions and areas to reflect. I would highly recommend it for groups or individual believers who are looking for a deeper study that makes you think, makes you dig deeper into God’s Word and ignites a greater understanding of the Holy Spirit’s insistence on the urgency to share the truth of the Gospel.
I just finished reading Erica's book, The Unexplainable Church. I feel convicted to finish the race and write my own "Acts 29" story. Erica presented God's Word as well as the history and facts behind the story of Paul's "Rome or Bust" journey in such a way that I had several "Aha moments." This is a must read for anyone wanting to learn Paul's model of obedience, perseverance, and joy in the journey God has given each of us.
I am a busy mom that is always on the run somewhere. I attended the study at my church. I always look forward to listening to Erica speak. The study is thought provoking. I always walk away from it thinking about what verses were in that days homework. The homework was a perfect amount. Very doable with a busy schedule. I always looked forward to getting into the book. Erica uses references to other places in the Bible but doesn’t jump around the whole time so you don’t spend your time searching. You get to mostly stay in acts and use what is given to answer the questions. That is important for me as I don’t normally have much time. Erica’s writing flows well and is easily understood. I look forward to her next study.
I loved this study of the early church in Acts. It was great to follow Paul’s journey, as he travelled to encourage the early churches to grow in love and grace. Erica does a great job of breaking down the scriptures in Acts. She writes such good, personal, and thought provoking questions each day to apply to our everyday life. This study also helps to apply the scriptures in the local church today.
Erica Wiggenhorn has written a bible study that should have a place on every Christians bookshelf. Set up in a 10 week format, the reader will find themselves absorbing the extraordinary truths that lie in the book of Acts. Other reviewers have mentioned the depth of this study as opposed to "light" studies and I wanted to high five them all, Erica included. I get so tired of "baby food" Bible studies that give the reader no depth or real understanding of the context behind the verses. The Unexplainable Church opens the door to a deeper view of Acts and the actions of the early missionary church. Erica uses history, theology, and more than a dash of boldness to help open the door to a study that leaves you wanting more and more and more. As Erica points out, Acts is a divine invitation. Not only to Barnabas and Paul but to the reader of the Word as well. Every day has a verse, questions to help you with the context, and even a link for further deeper study. It can also be used for small groups or house church with a free leadership guide.
I have enjoyed this Bible study so much! My favorite things about the study is how in-depth it is. I love how I gain so much insight and learn new things after each page.
This is a 10 week study on Acts chapters 13-28. The author takes us on a deep study of each and every verse in these chapters. The questions she asks help us to really take a good look at the text and see what the Lord is teaching us and telling us through His Word. Her questions aren't so difficult that you're confused but they aren't simplistic, either.
She also asks us questions that relate to our own lives. These questions help us to apply what we have learned to our own lives and, that to me, is what Bible study is about. Creating a life that glorifies God. I love how this study helps us to recognize that God can and does use us.
There is a wonderful map in the back for reference as you're studying about the disciples. I really like that because I like seeing where they are at as we follow them on their mission to share the Gospel. Before we start the study, Erica shares how to get the most out of it and I found this extremely helpful.
This would be a great study to do as an individual, a small group or a women's group study. I've enjoyed working on this Bible study so much and highly recommend it! I give it 5 out of 5 stars.
I’ve been looking for a Bible study that takes Scripture I’m familiar with but challenges me to dig deeper and learn more. Something that gives me a glimpse of history but also forces me to take those amazing experiences and apply it to my life.
That Bible study is The Unexplainable Church by Erica Wiggenhorn. This is a 10 week study of Acts 13-28 and focuses on “Reigniting the mission of the early believers.” This is a meaty study that has 50 lessons over 10 weeks, going through the Acts chapters verse-by-verse. There are a lot of questions to answer and invitations to learn even more at the author’s website.
It’s obvious Erica Wiggenhorn knows the Bible, and she’s very good at engaging readers and making sure they don’t just grow in the Lord, but that they know His-Story. Although I am not finished with the study, I find it deep, intensive, and thought-provoking. No one can read Acts without being captivated, even if someone has no desire to know Christ, the mere history of it is amazing. I believe all participants are going to finish this study with a deeper perspective and appreciation of the early church.
I received this study from the publisher in exchange for a review. The thoughts expressed are my own.
