I think this is a pretty faithful re-telling of the story. The characters remain largely unchanged. The language is significantly more accessibly than the original, and it can be read by a late Elementary age child without too much assistance. Of course, remember that it’s an allegory and not meant to be taken literally at any point, but that’s part of the charm of the original and this version. http://paschott.wordpress.com/2013/02/06/book-review-little-pilgrims-progress-by-helen-l-taylor/

Instead of reading Pilgrim's Progress, which would probably be a bit dry for my young teen's taste, I decided to read Little Pilgrim's Progress instead. It was a HUGE hit. Even though my son is older than the suggested age range, he (and I!!) had a wonderful time discussing all of the Christian allegory, while enjoying a good, old-fashioned tale of adventure. This is a book to read to your children and save for your grandchildren! http://guesthollow.com/blog/2013/02/little-pilgrims-progress/
